Review: Calicraft Brewing Co.

Review: Calicraft Brewing Co.

Allison January 9, 2018

I married into a beer family. My father-in-law, brother-in-law, and husband are all homebrewers and also enjoy tasting beers and visiting breweries. My nephew visited 50 breweries before he was 1 year old, so I knew that taking my own child to breweries was going to be par for the course. Luckily, we found Calicraft in Walnut Creek. Calicraft is a beer-loving parent’s dream come true. When you first pull up to the parking lot, you see the sprawling green lawn covered in picnic tables and blankets with groups and groups of families. I have never been to another brewery that was this family-friendly. Because of this, Calicraft is our go-to spot for meet-ups and outings with other families. And it’s not just us. This past weekend there was a group of about 10-15 families with infants! But let’s get to the review!

Calicraft Brewing Co. ★★★★★

Address: 2700 Mitchell Dr. Walnut Creek, CA

Hours: Mon-Thur 4:30-10pm, Fri-Sat 12pm-10pm, Sun 12pm-8pm

Parking: ★★★★★

Calicraft is located in a business park with a big parking lot. There is always plenty of parking, and they even usually have the spaces directly in front blocked off for a food truck or for playing yard games like corn hole.

Beer: ★★★★☆

This is a brewery so we need to rate the beer! I have had many unique beers at Calicraft. Some of my favorites have been their wine and beer mashups. I’ve had them with Viognier and Rose, and they are great for sipping on a sunny day. They are also known for their sour beers, and the last few times we have gone, there have been many sour options. The beers are all well made and inventive, and they are constantly changing what is on tap, so you can try something new every time you go. You can order a taster, flight, or a full glass of beer. They also fill growlers and crowlers to-go.

Accessibility for Kids: ★

Families will love coming to Calicraft! The large outdoor area tends to be crowded. However, the grass area provides enough space for families to squeeze in and sit down. There is always room on the grass to sit. I recommend bringing a blanket or camp chairs if you don’t like sitting on the grass because the seating can be at a premium. I love that the setup means that I can get my daughter situated outside, and she doesn’t even have to go into the bar itself at all.

If you do need to use it, there are changing tables in the bathrooms, but most of the time I just use the trunk of our car, because there is usually a line for the bathrooms (only one stall each for men and women). For older kids, they usually have a game of cornhole going, but there is definitely enough room to bring your own yard game as well. I see kids tossing a football around, and having a blast. In the summer it can get quite hot, but they do set-up sun canopies. The fact that sun shines on the lawn during the afternoon makes it the perfect spot to hang out at during the winter. We have gone several times during the winter, and even end up being hot from the sun shining on us.

I am reviewing Calicraft as a parent who likes to bring my daughter along with me. In that respect, Calicraft is the perfect place to visit to spend an afternoon with friends. Especially if they bring their kids as well. If you are not a parent and don’t like hanging out with a bunch of kids, I would recommend visiting Calicraft in the evenings, as there are fewer families. There are also special events like trivia and live music on select days. The beer is worth a visit, and the environment is worth many more. Let me know if you’ve been to Calicraft and what you think!
